At Nasruddin we believe in the holistic development of a child and we thus try to offer an array of extra-murals to aid our learners as they grow and develop into well-rounded individuals. Some extra-curricular activities are run by our stakeholders whilst others we offer internally. Allowing outside organisations has allowed us to offer a wider variety of activities, expand our learners horizons and because it is done on our school’s property we are able to ensure that the Islamic ethos of the school is not violated in anyway.
Our Extra-Murals Include:
The Helen O’Grady Drama Academy is the only organisation of its kind in Africa. It aims to provide a self-development drama programme encouraging the following: enthusiasm, energy and a positive approach to life; ongoing confidence; improved self esteem; skill in verbal communication; effective social interaction and performance skills. Classes are held on Tuesdays during school hours for Grade R-7 learners.
Experi-Buddies is an educational programme that uses experiments to show young children that the world of science can be fun. This is done by means of interactive projects, exciting demonstrations and basic experiments. Classes are held on Thursdays during school hours for Grade 0, R and 1 learners.
Children are born to move and through Monkeynastix® they are encouraged to explore and discover the world through their senses and their bodies with a fun and exciting movement education program – designed by specialists, endorsed by therapists and teachers, and loved by kids! Classes are held on Tuesdays during school hours.
Hockey was one of the first sporting codes to be established at our school. Our teams have become a force to reckon with on the field . Players (Grade 1-7 girls) practice weekly at the Astro Turf on the Gelvandale Sports Grounds during the Tuesday Sports Period and also attend workshops held by outside organisations at least twice a year. Hockey fixtures are played during the Second and Third term.
KFC Mini Cricket (previously known as Bakers Mini Cricket) is an excellent way of introducing learners to the sport of cricket. Players practice weekly at the Gelvandale Sports Grounds with coaches from Glen Bester Academy and play matches throughout the year. This code is offered to Grade 3 boys.
We have in recent years introduced Hard Ball cricket as a step up for our players who participate in the Mini Cricket. Our players practice weekly at the Gelvandale Sports Grounds with an experienced coach from Glen Bester Academy and have joined the Under 11 & 13 Leagues.
Soccer is by far the most popular sport amongst the boys. Our players are coached by Salif Atakora, a well-known soccer player and fitness instructor. Our boys have been doing us proud by bringing home excellent results from the league and also the Annual AMS Soccer Tournament.
In preparation for our Annual Athletics day (see more under our Events Section) all our learners practice on a weekly basis before the event. We have both track & field events which includes: sprinting 50m, 100m & 400m, long jump, high jump, shotput and a variety of fun races and obstacle courses for our little ones.
Our Foundation Phase learners participate in our Annual Read-A-Thon. This aims to encourage a love for reading amongst our learners from a young age. In our higher grades we have a “Reading Tree” in each class which shows how many books each learner has read for the year, learners who have read the most receive special gifts at the end of the year.
Each year our learners participate in the International Academic Olympiad, Conquesta. This helps us to gauge how well our school is doing academically in comparison to other schools both nationally and internationally. We always do well receiving predominantly Gold & Platinum certificates, Alhamdulillah.
